The drafter

The Cutter

Picture
Figuring out how to make two-dimensional flat plains fit around organic curves is what Claire Sparling does the most in the shop. She also looks after most of the finishing details work.
Picture
Chris Black, also known as the Cutter. Responsible for all fabric cutting, sewing machine operation, and ironing. When working, a sharp blade is always within reach.

The Sewing Machine

Picture
Inherited from my grandmother, Josephine once belonged to my great grandmother. She is the hardest working member of her team. If your garment needed a seam or buttonhole done by machine, it was most likely made by her.
Picture
This industrial Singer sewing machine is the tank in the shop (I'm pretty sure it can go through almost anything).
Who needs a workhorse when you can have an elephant!

From the 1940, this machine has stitched many miles of the leather, heavy canvas and who knows what else... when I turned it on I was expecting a loud engine roar but instead it was a soft purr... we call him Steve
Picture
A gift from my husband Alex, Caroline is my traveling companion, if there is work to be done on the road, or if I need a spare for workshops. She has earned her stripes.
Picture
Cécile an older twin of Caroline was a gift to my mother from my grandmother in her late teens. Is the backup to Josephine. And also makes the odd road trip and workshop date.
Picture
Serge, the Serger: he takes care of binding any raw edges, and he is bolted to the table so he can't run away.
Picture
Agnes is the zigzag machine... she sometimes has a bit of a temper. She was Chris's mothers machine and was the first one he used as a child.

The Tools

Picture
Originally ordered for my sewing display, this Tailor's Board fit my sewing assistant Chris' hands perfectly and he decided to adopt them. He's christened them "Moby Dick".
Picture
"Big red" my dressmaker shears. They fit my hands like a glove…
Picture
A gift from my mother, this rawhide sewing box contains all the essential small tools I need for my hand stitching projects.
